Coverage will be on chess24, as well as on the tournament website. After the dispute between chess24, and world chess organisation AGON, was resolved. This was due to world chess servers crashing during the candidates tournament held in Moscow earlier this year. This was where Karjakin saw off the favourites Caruana, Nakamura and Anand to become the next challenger for the world chess champion wreath of champions.
Commentary on chess24 will be done by russian 7 times champion and lover of cricket Peter Svidler and chess24's very own Jan Gustaffson. Together with Fiona Steil-Antoni, Eric Hansen and Robin Van Kampen they will provide a tremendous depth of knowledge and analysis. Fiona is planning behind the scenes segments throughout the broadcasts. Details of the schedule can be found on chess24.com.
For those who have never watched a chess tournament before be prepared for a gruelling tournament. The team above will do their best to keep you informed and more importantly entertained over the resulting hours.
Time control for the initial 12 games are 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by an addition of 30 minutes and then 15 minutes with a 30 second increment from move 1. If tied 6-6 after the 12 games then there will be 4 rapid games of 25 minutes + 10 seconds. Then if still tied two blitz games of 5 minutes + 3 seconds. Then if still tied then another two blitz games of 5 minutes + 3 seconds.
And then if still tied an Armagedon game of 5 minutes for the player with the white pieces vs 4 minutes for the player with the black pieces. Where if tied the player with the black pieces wins.
The question on everyone's lips is who will take Magnus Carlsen's trophy? And will russia's challenger Sergi Karjakin born in the Crimean peninsula, be the one to do so.
Time as always will tell.
Don't forget that chess is an endurance sport where the physical endurance and mental stamina of the contestants and audience may and probably will, be tested to the max.
And yours truly will be following it every step of the way, allowing for work and other commitments of course.
